Donation Drive for the Animals

December 10, 2009 by thsprotest

The Toronto Humane Society Protest Group is organizing a HUGE donation drive for the animals at the Toronto Humane Society  this weekend! There are over 1000 animals at the shelter right now that need your help. The animals will really appreciate the donations and the staff and volunteers will put them to good use!

Between the hours of 7am and 7pm on Saturday December 12th and Sunday December 13th please drop off donations at the Toronto Humane Society. The address is 11 River Street, which is at the corner of Queen Street East and River St.

Here is a list of supplies that the animals in the shelter desperately need.

For the Dogs

Used and new blankets. Please avoid down filled comforters as some of the dogs like to destroy their blankets. Feathers make a huge mess.

Dog beds of all sizes.

Good quality leashes and collars of all sizes. Please make sure they are strong. We wouldn’t want any dogs to break away from their collars while on a walk.

Plastic basket muzzles of all sizes. Pit Bulls need to wear them on their walks.

Plastic bags for the dog walkers

Strong dog toys of various sizes. Kongs, and squeaky toys for the cages, frisbees and large rubber balls for the dog parks.

Grooming supplies. Hair clippers, nail clippers, brushes, shampoo,

 For the Cats

Plastic cat toys.  Plastic ones are better than fabric ones as the plastic ones can be disinfected properly. The cats and kittens have been living in small cages with almost no stimulation. Some of these cats have been at the shelter for years and would appreciate a toy.

Towels and small cat beds for their cages.

Powdered KMR (Kitten Meal Replacement).

Large plastic litter boxes with no hood.

Cat treats

Grooming supplies like nail clippers and brushes.

Metal Bowls (no plastic please)

For the little guys in the small domestics department

Hideaways and Houses

Hammocks

Tunnels

Toys

Food

Exercise wheels

Water bottles that clip to the cage

Cages of all sizes

Bedding and Litter

Anything else you think that a rabbit, rat, mouse, guinea pig, hamster, gerbil, or chinchilla would enjoy.

Letter to the board and Ian McConachie

December 4, 2009 by thsprotest

Here is a letter that was emailed to us from a volunteer who is helping to clean up the mess that is the Toronto Humane Society. Anything that can be used to identify this person has been removed, as we don’t want anymore donor dollars being squandered on lawsuits. Here’s hoping that the board members and the public relations wizard actually read it.

***********************

To Bob Hambley, the board of directors, and Ian McConachie,

Imagine my surprise when I picked up the Metro News today on my way to volunteer at the Toronto Humane Society and found your full-page ad. I’m not really sure which aspect of your letter/advertisement is most offensive. You claim that “what you are hearing is inaccurate” in regards to the recent allegations about animal neglect at the shelter. Well as a former employee, and current volunteer I want to let you know that it is my firm belief that the allegations against you are not strong or numerous enough.

You have systematically destroyed what was once a safe haven for the lost and abandonded animals of our city. It is going to take months to sort out the mess you have made of the shelter, and years for the public to regain trust in the THS again.

Anyone can say “I have dedicated my life to the care of animals.” Words mean NOTHING. Where were you when the vets started quitting en mass because medically untrained staff were interfering with medical decisions? Where were you when there were as few as 6 animal care workers on a shift to feed, clean, and walk over 1300 animals? Where were you when the first newspaper article was published in 2006 about allegations of neglect? Where were you when there were hundreds of people protesting infront of the THS this summer?

You stated in your letter/advertisement that “I am listening to our members…”. Well I was at the AGM Mr. Hambley and you know what I witnessed? Member after member trying to voice their concerns at the the AGM only to be totally ignored by the board members that bothered to show up. Volunteers, former staff, and concerned members  were cut short when they tried to ask questions or make a complaint about animal care at the shelter. Were you listening then Mr. Hambley? I certainley didn’t see you objecting when Tim Trow cut the question and answer period short at the AGM. Calling the allegations “a bunch of hooey” doesn’t qualify as an appropriate answer.

You’ve stated that you “do everything possible to return animals to good health.” How do you explain the fact that there are many animals that haven’t been looked at by a veterinarian in several months (some in over a year) even though they have chronic health conditions? How do you explain the cat kennel cards that say “released in the basement as per Andy”? How do explain the fact that sick animals were being housed with healthy ones? Why has there been a lack of supplies for the veterinary staff? Why has there been a shortage of medications for the animals?

You’ve claimed in your letter/advertisement that “donation dollars are going to where they should – to the care and treatment of animals”. Well I want to know how you explain the fact that the board of directors was going to let the THS foot the bill for the legal costs of the 5 people charged with animal cruelty.  You were quoted in the Toronto Star last week saying, “Morally, you have to protect your employees, and legally, you have to indemnify the directors” You also said “”We owe it to our employees,” in reference to paying the legal bills with donor dollars. What about what you owe the animals? This year alone you have spent $418,609 on legal fees yet have only spent $276,248 on emergency animal care. How do you defend that financial decision?

You are trying to deflect attention away from yourselves and put the spotlight on the OSPCA by claiming that the OSPCA has some sort of vendetta against the THS. Do you really think that the public is that stupid? Instead of doing what is best for the animals (which would be resigning from the board of directors), you are putting out press releases and putting letters in the newspapers.  Did donor dollars pay for your full page letter/adveristement in the Metro today?

I have a few more questions for you that I doubt you will have the decency to answer.

  1. Why were wild animals that were found in Toronto released in Newmarket by THS employees (at the direction of management) when wildlife is supposed to be released within 1km of where they were found? Are you not concerned with the spread of disease within our wildlife populations?
  2. Why was nothing done to try to stop the revolving door of staff at the shelter? Why did you not deal with the chronic understaffing or develop any employee retention programs?
  3. Why is the board only responding to allegations of abuse and neglect at the shelter now that the OSPCA has raided the THS? These allegations were brought to the boards attention in 2006.
  4. Why did you reaffirm your support of Tim Trow after all of these allegations of abuse and neglect were published in the Globe and Mail in June?
  5. Why was Casper (the cat found dead in a live trap in the ceiling) marked as euthanized when that clearly wasn’t what happened?
  6. Why did you wait until now to consider hiring a person to come to review animal care procedures at the Toronto Humane Society? That would have been a good idea a few hundred dead animals ago.
  7. Why was Tim Trow allowed to be both the president of the board and essentially the acting executive director of the Toronto Humane Society? Why did you allow Tim Trow to have so much power at the THS?
  8. Why have you not acknowledged that majority of the staff inside the THS have declared that the current board of directors and Ian McConachie do not represent the staff inside the shelter. Doesn’t this declaration concern you?
  9. Mr. Hambley, why did you sign membership rejection letters including a letter to someone who didn’t apply?
  10. Mr. Hambley, how many scandals have you lived through at the Toronto Humane Society since you became a director? What about the other directors? How many more scandals do you think that the members should support you through?
  11. I noticed that “hospital” was added to the official THS logo. I don’t recall the change of the charity’s name being discussed at the AGM. Did the members vote on changing the name?
  12. Why do you keep claiming that the Toronto Humane Society is a hospital, when in reality the clinic portion of the THS makes up a very small percentage of the shelter?
  13. Why were there no veterinarians or registered technicians on the overnight shift at the “hospital”?
  14. Why is the board of directors refusing to acknowledge ANY accountablilty or responsibility when it comes to the situation at the THS?
  15. Why have you not issued a formal apology to the animals at the THS, the members, the donors, and the citizens of Toronto?

I haven’t forgotten about Ian McConachie….

Ian McConachie has stated several times that the people complaining about the THS were just disgruntled former employees using the animals as a political tool. You know what I have seen everyday since the OSPCA raided the shelter? A lot of former staff and volunteers donating their time to help the animals at the THS.  “Disgruntled” former animal care workers volunteering their time to clean cages, feed animals, walk dogs, wash dishes, laundry, and a myriad of other tasks to help with the complete lack of animal care staff at the shelter. Registered veterinary technicians who are “disgruntled” ex-employees volunteering their time to medicate, vaccinate, and assist veterinarians with the hundreds of animals that have been going without medical care. Veterinarians who are “disgruntled” ex-employees that are examining animals, designing treatment plans, doing medical procedures, and ensuring that the animals are getting the veterinary care they so desperately need. Ex-volunteers who were fired for being vocal about their concerns, or who quit out of sheer frustration are back. They are grooming cats, filling water bowls, walking dogs, and doing whatever they can to help out.

When was the last time you filled a water bowl or cleaned a cage at the Toronto Humane Society Ian?

Why is Ian still the PR guy for the THS anyway?  He has been caught lying to the press, he screamed at a member during the AGM, cried at the AGM,  and allegedly surrendured his own dog to the THS. He also said that Casper (the cat found dead in the ceiling) was likely a stray (Casper turned out to be a THS animal who had been marked as euthanised) and referred to knowing that there was a dead cat in the ceiling as “unpleasant”. He didn’t say horrifying, or shocking, or heartbreaking. He said unpleasant.

The whole lot of you should be ashamed of yourselves. You should be ashamed of what you have allowed to happen to the animals at the shelter, for treating the staff and volunteers like toilet paper, for wasting donor dollars, and for ruining the reputation of the Toronto Humane Society. I urge all of you to resign from your positions at the THS. At this point it is the least you can do.

Threats?

December 2, 2009 by thsprotest

The people who are sending threats to staff members inside the Toronto Humane Society are misdirecting their anger. The people inside are busting their asses trying to help the animals at the THS and have been for years. The staff inside are not at fault. The people at fault have been arrested. Instead of sending threats you should be thanking them for continuing to help animals even though they had to work in such a toxic work environment. The people inside are TRUE ANIMAL LOVERS and they need your support.

It’s a Nightmare at the Toronto Humane Society

December 1, 2009 by thsprotest

It is way worse inside the Toronto Humane Society than we had thought. A “house of horrors” is an accurate description.

There are too many animals and not enough staff. THS staff say that sometimes there were as few as 6 animal care workers working the day shift. They were responsible for feeding, cleaning, and walking every animal in the building before 3pm. When the animal to staff ratio gets to 1 ACW for every 250+ animals, it becomes clear as day why the THS is in the shambles it is in. Right now there are volunteers helping the THS staff to try to put a dent in what needs to be done. If you are an experienced animal care worker please head down to the THS to volunteer some time. The cages need a serious scrub down. If you are a registered veterinary technician or a veterinarian please contact the protest group. The animals are desperate for your help.

Animals are sick. Sick cats are housed with healthy cats. There are very lax disease prevention protocols in place to stop the spread of URI. The little protocols that they do have are often ignored out of necessity by the staff. When you have to choose between washing your hands between handling each cat, and ensuring that each cat gets food and water, disease prevention goes out the window. Currently THS staff is trying to implement some disease prevention protocols to help stop the spread of disease at the shelter. THIS IS A HUGE TASK! They are working to separate the sick from the healthy, stop the spread of disease, and prevent diseases from spreading through the building in the future.

There are many sick animals that should have seen a vet months ago but didn’t. There are cats with severe urine scald, cats covered in mats, nails so overgrown that they have curled around and grown into the pads of their paws, eye infections, URI, dehydration, and animals that are very underweight. This neglect has being going on for a long time. If the animals came into the shelter like this they should have been taken care of on intake. A lot of these animals came into the building healthy and clean and slowly degraded over time because of understaffing. There are incomplete medical charts, sick animals with no medical charts, and animals that have been receiving inconsistent medical care if they have been getting any at all. If you are a vet or a tech PLEASE VOLUNTEER SOME TIME! There are so many animals that need medical attention. Help them get it sooner.

There are animals that haven’t been vaccinated, haven’t received booster shots in years, and animals that were admitted months ago (some over a year ago) that were put into adoptions without a vet ever having looked at them. Animals that were seen by a vet and were marked for treatment weren’t receiving those treatments because there was nobody to give it to them. You have staff that were directed by management to mark treatments as done when they weren’t so that the papers “looked in order”. Right now the staff and volunteers are trying to get this mess sorted out.

There were unqualified staff members holding medical positions.  Some Animal Care Workers were “promoted” and asked by management to inject medications, microchip animals, put animals on fluids, and take blood samples. This practice has caused a lot of problems. A striking example is that cat that was micro chipped in the brain because an under qualified staff member was told to microchip it.

Expired food was in the rotation to be fed to animals. One of the major problems is that the staff were so rushed to feed the animals that they didn’t have time to check the expiry dates on the cans and bags before feeding. Currently volunteers and staff are throwing out expired food as they come across it. The food is a disorganized mess so this is going to be a huge task that maybe some volunteers can help out with.

Almost everything in the building has a layer of grime on it. There is rodent feces everywhere. On food cans, in drawers, on counters, and anywhere else you can think of.  The entire building needs to be disinfected from the floors, to the walls to the ceilings. There is dirt and grime everywhere.

There is a lot more going on inside the Toronto Humane Society. We are working on some more blog posts to cover the scare tactics used by management to silence staff members and volunteers, the complete lack of behaviour assessment and training for dogs, the wildlife department, financial mismanagement, legal fees, and other topics related to animal care at the Toronto Humane Society.

In the meantime if you are interested in donating supplies to the Toronto Humane Society they need

Good quality leashes and collars of all sizes.

Blankets (nothing down filled) and towels (used are fine)

Grooming supplies. Brushes, nail clippers, hair clippers for shaving mats, quick stop, shampoo and conditioner.

Basket muzzles of all sizes

Supplies for the small domestics room like cages, food, fresh vegetables, etc.

Plastic kitten toys.

Medications in their original bottles that have not expired.

Plastic bags for the dog walkers

Arrests were finally made at the THS

November 27, 2009 by thsprotest

Arrests were made today at the THS.  Toronto Humane Society President Tim Trow, Head veterinarian Steve Sheridan, Shelter manager Gary McCracken, Business manager Romeo Bernadino, and Shelter supervisor Andy Bechtel were all arrested. Our understanding is that all five have bail hearings tomorrow.

All five of them have been charged with cruelty to animals and conspiracy to commit an indictable offence. Some of them have also been charged with obstruction of a peace officer. The board of directors, along with Tim, Steve, Gary, Romeo, and Andy are also facing charges of animal cruelty under the Ontario SPCA act.

There is a long road ahead for the Toronto Humane Society, but these arrests have paved the way for much needed reform. The animals deserve big changes and the protest group is keeping a close eye on what is going on over there. We will keep you updated with information as we get it.

Right now there are several veterinarians at the THS who are giving each animal a thorough medical exam. Current veterinarians of the THS and veterinarians from other clinics who are volunteering are working together. There are animal care workers taking care of the animals under the close supervision of the OSPCA.  OSPCA staff are working diligently with THS staff to make sure that the needs of the animals are being met.

Thank you everyone who participated in the investigation. Thank you to all of you for spreading the word, attending the protests, writing letters, and applying for membership. A special thank you to Kate Hammer of the Globe and Mail, and Daniel Dale of the Toronto Star for writing so many articles, and for keeping the problems at the Toronto Humane Society in the public eye.

If you haven’t applied for membership yet please do so. BIG CHANGES ARE COMING! We’ll be keeping you updated as we get new information.

Here are the links to the articles about the arrests. If you are interested in reading more about what has been happening at the THS please visit our “In The News” section which as a long list of online articles.
